PPC for HVAC can reach customers searching for repairs, maintenance and installations. Google Search campaigns charge for clicks, Local Services Ads charge for valid leads, and Performance Max runs across several Google channels with billing that depends on the placement and format. Choose the product with its targeting, measurement and charging rules in mind.
Costs depend on the service, market and channel. Google's US Keyword Planner figures show top-of-page bids ranging from $16.09 to $100.00 for “ac repair,” but those national historical bids are not a local price quote. Published lead benchmarks also measure different things: a click becoming a lead, a lead becoming an appointment, and a lead becoming a paying customer.
The figures and Google requirements below were checked October 13, 2026, in UTC. Dollar amounts are USD. Use the service-specific figures, budget rules and tracking guidance to plan campaigns around the work you can serve and the outcomes you can measure.
What HVAC customers search, and the historical bid ranges
Repair and installation searches have different national demand and historical bids. Use the figures below to understand the terms customers use, then check the market you actually serve.
These Google Ads Keyword Planner historical metrics cover the United States and were pulled October 13, 2026. Monthly searches are Google's rounded 12-month averages. The bid range is the low to high top-of-page bid advertisers paid. These are national figures; one town's numbers differ. The ranges are historical top-of-page bids, not calculated click-cost estimates.
US HVAC keyword demand and top-of-page bids

Local Services Ads eligibility, verification and charging
HVAC—heating or air conditioning—is an eligible US Local Services Ads category. Availability depends on your area, so check eligibility before planning a launch. Leads can arrive as calls, messages or bookings.
Google classifies HVAC as an urgent category. Its HVAC requirements list business, owner and service-professional background checks; general liability and professional liability insurance; and state-level business and owner licenses. Applicability footnotes matter: requirements vary by category and location, and your dashboard identifies what your business must complete. Insurance minimums appear on the upload screen and depend on category and location. Google does not publish a universal HVAC coverage amount there.
You must have a public, verified Google Business Profile. Google's HVAC requirements section does not publish a numerical minimum rating or review count. General screening guidance mentions category-dependent minimum review requirements, so do not assume a universal five-review requirement.
Google's current badge documentation describes a single Google Verified badge. Eligible existing verified advertisers receive it automatically; new advertisers must complete verification. Google says the badge change does not affect ranking. Its marketing page still describes Google Guaranteed for home services and Google Screened for business services, creating a wording conflict with the current help guidance.
Google says it is discontinuing the money-back guarantee associated with Google Guarantee. Reimbursement eligibility applies to services booked before December 7, 2025, with requests due within 30 days of initial service completion.
LSA charges for valid leads, not clicks or completed jobs. Google publishes no fixed nationwide HVAC lead price. Prices vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. Message leads are typically cheaper than corresponding phone leads, but not always.
Invalid or low-quality leads may be uncharged initially or automatically credited after reassessment. Google describes a 30-day assessment period. Follow-up from the same phone or email is not charged again when interaction continues within 15 days; new contact after 15 days without activity can create another chargeable lead.

Search, Local Services Ads and Performance Max work differently
Search gives you keyword-based campaigns with advertiser-supplied text ads and destinations. Conversion bidding changes how Google optimizes bids; it does not change Search placements from click charging to LSA-style lead charging.
LSA uses a local provider profile for relevant services in selected areas. Screening, reviews, responsiveness, service categories and job types matter. Its bidding modes are Maximize leads, Target cost per lead (tCPL) and Max per lead.
Performance Max is one goal-based campaign across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Google automates bidding, creative combinations and reach, and says it can complement keyword-based Search. Its billing depends on placement and format, so it is not fixed-price lead purchasing.
Google does not publish subscription tiers or a fixed HVAC price list for these products. The product documentation had no visible publication or update dates when accessed October 13, 2026.

Set budgets, bidding and location targeting
For most Search campaigns, the daily charging limit is 2× the average daily budget and the monthly limit is 30.4×. Google calculates an average daily budget from a monthly amount by dividing by 30.4. These formulas control spending; they do not prescribe an HVAC budget.
LSA uses an average weekly budget, and spending can exceed that amount in an individual week. Its published monthly maximum is weekly budget × 30.4 ÷ 7. Google recommends Maximize leads with a budget sufficient for at least 10 leads per week for optimal results. It says accurate results take about two weeks while the model learns. tCPL targets an average lead cost; Max per lead sets a manual bid limit.
For Performance Max lead-generation setup, Google recommends an average daily budget of at least 3× CPA or cost per conversion for the selected conversion actions.
Choose Search bidding according to the outcome you need to optimize. Maximize conversions pursues conversion volume within a budget; Target CPA pursues conversions at an average acquisition-cost target. Maximize conversion value and Target ROAS optimize value, while Maximize clicks optimizes traffic. An excessively low target CPA may sacrifice clicks that could convert and reduce total conversions. A target is not a guaranteed price for every lead.
Starting June 2026, Google says “Maximize conversions with a Target CPA” becomes “Target CPA,” and the equivalent target-ROAS label becomes “Target ROAS.” The underlying behavior remains unchanged.
Google supports countries, areas within countries and radius targeting. The default Presence or Interest setting can include people outside your service area who express interest in it. Presence targets people likely in, or regularly in, the selected area and makes sense when you want only users in specific locations. Location detection is not guaranteed 100% accurate.
Google does not publish a universal minimum monthly HVAC Search budget, guaranteed HVAC conversion rate or guaranteed number of booked jobs in this guidance.

Measure calls, qualified leads and customer outcomes
Measure calls as well as forms. Calls from ads and website forwarding numbers can use a chosen minimum duration for conversion measurement. A mobile website phone-link click measures a click, not a completed call. Import CRM call outcomes to measure sales or other valuable results.
Check which conversion actions feed bidding. Primary actions feed bidding when their standard goal is used. Secondary actions normally appear only in All conversions, but a secondary action included in a custom goal can feed bidding too. Incorrect configuration can undermine Smart Bidding.
Enhanced conversions for leads connects website lead information with imported offline outcomes using hashed first-party data. Google's implementation guidance identifies qualified lead and converted lead goals, recommends retaining GCLIDs, and describes order IDs for duplicate control. This lets you measure outcomes beyond an initial inquiry.
Google's enhanced-conversion settings page specifies simultaneous data acceptance from April 2026, unified web/leads settings from June 2026, and upload migration to the Data Manager API starting June 15, 2026, with qualifications for legacy access. Some linked implementation text still mentions the Google Ads API, so check the current settings guidance when choosing an upload method.

Published HVAC advertising benchmarks
Keep the category, channel and measurement period attached to every benchmark. A click-to-lead conversion rate, a lead-to-appointment book rate and a paying-customer outcome measure different stages. Do not use an appointment booking rate as a click-to-lead conversion rate.
LocaliQ's 2025 home-services report covers Google and Microsoft search ads. Its methodology includes 3,211 US campaigns from April 1, 2024 through March 21, 2025, with at least 103 active campaigns per category. Its reported “averages” are medians. The 2026 Home & Home Improvement category is broader than HVAC.
SearchLight's January 2026 Google Ads sample blends HVAC and plumbing. It includes 816 contractors, 8,077 campaigns, $14.88M spend and 143,008 leads, using spend-weighted calculations, market normalization and outlier filtering. The page displays both “Last Updated: February 2026” and “Last Updated: March 2026”; the measurement month is January 2026.
SearchLight's February 2026 LSA sample includes 888 contractors, 1,774 campaigns, $6.72M spend and 126,650 leads. Trade classification uses channel naming. Its HVAC row covers 409 accounts and $1.52M spend. These are vendor-observed samples, not a nationwide census.
AdsManagement.co labels its cost metric “acquisition” without defining whether it means a lead or a customer. Its benchmark page does not publish a sample size, geographic coverage, collection window or calculation methodology. Treat its $55 CPA accordingly.
Bear North's April 14, 2026 page explicitly says it does not publish benchmark numbers. Conflicting search-indexed text at the same URL displayed CTR 3–5%, CPL $30–$80 and conversion rate 5–8%; those figures are not verified current-page benchmarks.

Common campaign mistakes and how to avoid them
Review targeting, queries, landing pages, tracking and follow-up together. A campaign can attract relevant searches yet still miss valuable outcomes if the calls go unanswered or bidding learns from the wrong conversion actions.
The problems below are documented failure modes, not estimates of how often HVAC businesses make them. Use them as checks when launching or reviewing campaigns.
Documented HVAC advertising mistakes

How to use other HVAC PPC guides
HVAC PPC guides can help with account structure, service intent, seasonality and call handling. Check their dates and assumptions before adopting a budget, benchmark, badge description or tracking claim. Google's current documentation covers details that some guides omit, including verification, lead credits, spending limits and offline conversion imports.
The pages below appeared for “ppc for hvac” and related queries. Their exact Google US positions are not established by a reproducible, location-specific ranking. Coverage limitations describe these pages, rather than everything available on each publisher's site.
Illustrative ad copy such as “5.0 Rated” or “500+ 5-Star Reviews” is not evidence of a business's verified rating or review count. Likewise, a discussion of 30 conversions should not be treated as a universal Google eligibility threshold.

Research context
Facts to keep in view
AC repair search demand: 368000 monthly US searches
Keyword Planner's rounded 12-month average, pulled October 13, 2026. The historical top-of-page bid range is $16.09 to $100.00; local figures differ.
Air conditioning Search benchmark: $127.74 CPL
LocaliQ's 2025 Air Conditioning Installation & Repair category covers Google and Microsoft search ads. Its conversion rate is 6.56% and CTR is 6.43%; reported averages are medians.
HVAC Local Services Ads benchmark: $51 CPL; 44.0% book rate
SearchLight's February 2026 HVAC LSA row covers 409 accounts and $1.52M in spend. Book rate measures leads becoming appointments, not clicks becoming leads.
Current LSA badge: Google Verified
Google's current help documentation describes a single badge and says the badge change does not affect ranking. Some marketing pages still use Google Guaranteed or Google Screened.
Search spending limits: 2× daily; 30.4× monthly
For most campaigns, these limits apply to the average daily budget. They are spending rules, not a recommended HVAC budget.
LSA bidding guidance: At least 10 leads per week
Google recommends Maximize leads with a budget sufficient for at least 10 weekly leads for optimal results, and says accurate results take about two weeks while the model learns.
A practical path
What to do
- 01
Check Local Services Ads eligibility for your service area. HVAC is an eligible US category, but availability depends on the area.
- 02
For LSA, maintain a public, verified Google Business Profile and complete the screening, insurance and licensing requirements shown in your dashboard.
- 03
Choose the advertising product deliberately: Search uses keywords and charges for clicks; LSA charges for valid leads; Performance Max reaches multiple Google channels.
- 04
Separate services so ads, landing pages, budgets and reporting can match repair, maintenance and installation searches.
- 05
Set geographic targeting for the areas you serve. Use Presence when you want people likely in, or regularly in, those areas, while allowing for imperfect location detection.
- 06
Review actual search terms and add relevant negative keywords for unwanted employment, training, parts or DIY searches. Check variants and avoid exclusions that block valuable queries.
- 07
Set budgets using the applicable daily or weekly spending rules. Choose bidding around conversion volume, acquisition cost, value or traffic, and avoid an unrealistically low target CPA.
- 08
Track forms and calls. Distinguish a phone-link click from a completed call, and configure primary and secondary conversion actions to match the outcomes bidding should pursue.
- 09
Import qualified leads, converted leads and call outcomes where applicable. Retain GCLIDs and use order IDs for duplicate control when implementing enhanced conversions for leads.
- 10
Run emergency advertising when you can answer and follow up. Compare lead costs with appointment bookings and paying customers before judging campaign performance.
Watch for these
Common mistakes
Assuming cities or ZIP codes create a strict boundary
Presence or Interest can include people outside the selected area who express interest in it. Presence narrows eligibility to people likely in, or regularly in, the area, but location detection is not guaranteed 100% accurate.
Paying for irrelevant searches without reviewing queries
Review search terms for employment, training, parts and DIY intent. Documented HVAC examples include “HVAC jobs,” “salary,” “school” and “parts.”
Assuming negative keywords cover every variant
Google says negatives do not match close variants. Check the searches you intend to block, and avoid blanket exclusions that remove relevant demand; “free” needs context if you advertise free estimates.
Using generic ads and a homepage for every service
Mismatched landing pages and unrelated services grouped under generic ads weaken the connection between the search and the offer and limit service-specific budget and reporting control.
Counting phone clicks as completed calls
A mobile website phone-link click measures the click. Calls from ads and website forwarding numbers can be measured using a chosen minimum duration, and CRM call outcomes can measure sales or other valuable results.
Optimizing to the wrong conversion actions
Primary actions feed bidding when their standard goal is used. Secondary actions normally appear in All conversions, but can feed bidding when included in a custom goal.
Advertising emergency service without answering capacity
Unanswered calls and slow follow-up can lose opportunities. Google says regularly failing to answer or respond can affect LSA ranking.
Treating a low lead cost as profitable customer acquisition
Lead costs and booking rates differ by channel. Measure appointments and paying customers as well as leads before deciding whether a campaign is profitable.
