Executive Summary

The local search landscape in 2026 is defined by three major shifts: the mainstream adoption of AI tools, heightened consumer expectations for review freshness and response times, and Google's continued emphasis on mobile experience and local relevance signals.

Our research, conducted across 2,500+ local service businesses in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, auto repair, and landscaping verticals, reveals that the gap between high-performing and average businesses has widened significantly. The top 20% of businesses now capture 68% of local search visibility—up from 52% in 2023.

The businesses winning in local search share common characteristics: consistent review acquisition (not sporadic campaigns), rapid review response times, investment in AI-assisted marketing tools, and a mobile-first approach to their web presence. Perhaps most notably, these businesses treat their Google Business Profile as a primary marketing channel, not an afterthought.

This report provides industry benchmarks, actionable recommendations, and trend analysis to help local service businesses improve their search visibility and customer acquisition in 2026.

Businesses that respond within 24 hours see 18% higher conversion rates from Google Business Profile views.

Optimize for Voice Search Queries

Structure content to answer conversational questions. Focus on "who," "what," "when," and "how" query formats.

Invest in AI-Assisted Marketing

High-performing businesses leverage AI for content creation, review management, and customer communication. Start with one tool and expand.

Build Local Link Equity

Partnerships with local chambers, suppliers, and community organizations provide both referrals and ranking signals.

Create Industry-Specific Content

Generic service pages underperform. Create content addressing specific problems your industry solves in your service area.

Methodology

This research was conducted between October and December 2025, analyzing data from 2,547 local service businesses across six verticals: HVAC (426), Plumbing (412), Electrical (398), Roofing (387), Auto Repair (462), and Landscaping (462).

Data Sources

  • Google Business Profile data (reviews, ratings, response rates)
  • Website performance metrics via Core Web Vitals API
  • Survey responses from 847 local business owners
  • Search visibility tracking across 50 US metropolitan areas
  • Consumer behavior survey (1,200 respondents)

Businesses were selected based on having an active Google Business Profile with at least 10 reviews and a verified service area within the target metropolitan regions. High-performing businesses were defined as those ranking in the top 20% for local pack visibility in their primary service area.
