FlashCrafterGuide
A working guide for owners of independent local service businesses in the United States — what consumers actually check, what Google permits, and what reputation work costs.
Owners of independent local service businesses in the United States
For a local service business, online reputation management is mostly review work: keeping your rating above the threshold customers now demand, replying to every review, asking for new ones within Google's rules, and knowing how to report a review that violates policy. It is also a budgeting question, because the same job can be done free in a few hours a week or bought from an agency for thousands of dollars a month. This guide covers the consumer data, the platform rules, the practical steps, and the price ranges, with each figure attributed to the page that publishes it.

A practical path
Check where your rating sits against the current thresholds
Open your Google Business Profile and note the star rating and review count. The bar has moved: 31% of consumers will only use a business rated 4.5 or higher, up from 17% the year before, and 68% require at least 4 stars. If your profile sits at 4.3, roughly a third of searchers are screened out on rating alone before they read a word of your listing.
Reply to every review, including the positive ones
80% of consumers say they are more likely to use a business that replies to all of its reviews. Replies are public, so keep them professional and relevant, protect the customer's privacy, and avoid personal attacks. For a negative review, acknowledge the experience, say only what you can responsibly say about the job, give a direct resolution path, and move sensitive details to a phone call or email.
Ask for reviews, inside Google's rules
You may ask customers for reviews and you may send a Google review link or a QR code. You may not offer an incentive, gate the request, ask only customers you know are happy, or tell anyone what to write. Reviews must reflect genuine experiences.
Learn the report path before you need it
Business Profile → Read reviews → Report → select the reason → submit. Only reviews that violate policy are eligible, and reporting does not guarantee removal. Reporting is not a substitute for replying.
Work the platforms your customers actually use
Restaurants and retail should prioritize Google Business Profile management. Service businesses may warrant attention on Yelp, Angi, or Houzz as well.
Watch for these

Flagging policy violations is available, but consumers reward visible replies — 80% are more likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews — and reporting does not guarantee removal. Answer first, then report if the review violates policy. The 57% figure for consumers who only buy from businesses with 4 or more stars comes from a 2018 survey. The current panel puts 31% at 4.5 or higher and 68% at 4.0 or higher. Content suppression is quoted at $1,500–$4,000 per month; review monitoring at $500–$1,200 and response management at $800–$2,000. Most pages bundle these under one label, which is one reason quoted ranges diverge. Confirm whether responses are drafted and sent in your name, whether you approve them first, what reporting you get, and how many hours per week of your own time the engagement still needs. Source: https://getsearchengine.com/blog/reputation-management/
Published ranges for professional work span roughly $500–$3,000+ per month on one accounting-software guide, $1,500–$5,000 per month for small-business comprehensive work on another page, and $1,500–$5,000 per month for a full-service agency on a third. 40% of consumers only consider reviews written in the past two weeks — a 2018 figure, but the only published recency number available. A profile whose newest review is months old has a fresh-content problem even if its average is high. Source: https://digitalskyrocket.com/online-reputation-management-for-small-businesses/

Takeaway
Rating thresholds have risen to 4.5 for a third of consumers, and replying to every review is now a measurable ranking and conversion advantage. The cheapest credible route is 10–15 hours a week of your own time at $0 in software; the most expensive quoted route is $5,000 a month with 1–2 hours of oversight. Get the scope in writing, keep solicitation inside Google's rules, and budget the hours, not just the money.
Best starting point
Reply to every review and ask for new ones
80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that replies to all of its reviews, and review signals carry roughly 20% of Local Pack placement weight. Both actions are free and inside Google's rules.
Best low-cost route
Review management software
$197–$297 per month at 2–3 hours per week keeps you in control, against 10–15 hours per week for manual work at $0 or $1,500–$5,000 per month for an agency that owns the process.
Before paying anyone
Written scope and component pricing
Monitoring ($500–$1,200), response management ($800–$2,000), and suppression ($1,500–$4,000) are priced separately; a business with no suppression need should not be quoted suppression prices.
