AI for Local Business: What Works, What It Costs, and the Rules to Follow

Published adoption figures range from about 20% to about 89%. The gap comes from definitions: some surveys count any AI use in any business function, others count only generative AI, others count workers rather than firms, and the samples differ.

The most rigorous figure is from the Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey. It found 17% to 20% of all US businesses used AI in any business function, with 19.8% on May 3, 2026. Data were collected December 14, 2025 to May 3, 2026 and published May 26, 2026. Firms with 4 or fewer employees were under 20%, firms with 100 to 249 employees were at 32%, and firms with 250 or more were at 37%.

The Minneapolis Fed (published May 29, 2026, using 2023 to 2025 data plus an April 2026 supplement) found 17% of firms with fewer than 20 employees used AI, under 10% in accommodation/food and construction, and about 20% in health care. It also notes that Census changed its question in November 2025, from AI used "in producing goods or services" (about 10%) to AI used "in any of its business functions" (about 20%). Earlier figures are not comparable with later ones.

Industry and vendor surveys give higher numbers. The U.S. Chamber report (published August 18, 2025, Teneo Research with C_TEC) says 58% of small businesses use generative AI, up from 40% in 2024 and 23% in 2023, with almost 60% using AI for operations. Maine was highest at 77% and West Virginia lowest at 31%. The page does not show sample size or fieldwork dates. A Chamber Foundation report released June 17, 2026 (summarized by CBIA on July 2, 2026) found 50% of small-business workers use AI for work tasks: 43% at the smallest firms (2 to 9 employees) versus 59% at firms with 100 to 249 workers.

Intuit's 2026 AI Impact Report (published May 13, 2026) says more than 3 in 4 US small and mid-sized businesses use AI regularly, based on 34,000+ owners surveyed plus 5.3 million QuickBooks businesses across the US, Canada, UK and Australia. Intuit's landing page does not show the underlying metrics, and the 77% usage, 78% productivity and 43% revenue figures seen elsewhere come only from search-result summaries. Intuit's baseline is also cited two ways, as 48% in July 2024 and 48% in July 2025, and those cannot be reconciled.

Two claims circulate widely and should be treated cautiously. "89% of small businesses use AI" is attributed to the Chamber by several blog posts but does not appear on the Chamber pages checked. "68% of US small businesses use AI every day" appears on theStacc's blog and in a search snippet with no primary source that could be located.

Sterling Sky's "The State of Local SEO in 2026" (published June 26, 2026) studied 322 markets. AI local packs showed 5,943 unique businesses, compared with 18,330 in the legacy 3-pack, about 32%. 88% of markets had fewer unique businesses in the AI pack. AI packs showed 1 to 2 businesses, had no call buttons, appeared on about 7% of tracked keywords, and were visible only on mobile in the US.

The same report notes click-to-call has declined over two years (measured across 179 profiles at 34 law firms), and that Google replaced call buttons with images for some categories such as handyman.

A separate study reports that 28.5% of Local Pack businesses are missing from AI Mode (1,120 searches). It comes from a press release that has not been verified, so treat it as unconfirmed.

For a service business, the practical point is that when no call button is shown, customers need another way to reach you: a website that loads fast and explains your services, a booking path, and profile data that is consistent everywhere.

ChatGPT. OpenAI's pricing page could not be loaded, so the following secondary figures from CloudZero are unverified against OpenAI: Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro $100 or $200, and Business $20 per seat annual or $25 monthly (2-seat minimum). Check OpenAI's page for current prices.

Gemini for Business Profile. No pricing is stated. Google says "special Workspace and Gemini offers coming soon" (Google blog, June 10, 2026).

Google Local Services Ads. Google publishes no prices. It says you pay per lead, set your own budget, and that cost varies by category, location and job type. Agency-published benchmarks put the average around $53 per lead; one agency says this comes from $6.72 million of spend across 888 contractors in February 2026. Reported ranges include HVAC about $51, plumbing $57, electrical $39 and roofing $55 to $90. The underlying agency pages were not opened, so treat these as rough guides, not Google data.

AI content services. theStacc (updated July 10, 2026) lists its own price at $99 a month for 30 articles and managed service from $749 a month. It cites freelance writers at $2,400 to $7,500 a month for 30 posts and SEO agencies at $1,000 to $5,000 a month. These are vendor-published and unsourced. Its claims that 66% of users save $500 to $2,000 a month and 58% free up 20 or more hours are also unsourced.

Whatever AI content you buy, remember Google's scaled content abuse policy: volume without value to readers is the risk, not AI use itself.

Representation guidelines. The name must reflect the real-world name, without taglines, service descriptors or similar additions. Service-area businesses get one profile with a designated service area. A physical address is required; PO boxes and unstaffed virtual offices are not accepted. No guidance on AI or automated content was found on that page.

Reviews. Google's Maps user-generated content policy prohibits content "not based on a real experience." It prohibits incentives "such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services" for reviews, or for removing a negative one. It allows soliciting genuine reviews without incentives. Nothing AI-specific appeared on the page, and no Google statement on AI-generated Business Profile content was found in the guidelines or review policy pages.

Gemini integration. In a June 10, 2026 blog post, Google said owners can connect a Business Profile to Gemini to draft review replies, update hours, create posts, summarize performance (impressions, direction requests, calls) and get alerts for unanswered questions. Rollout was described as global except the EEA and UK. Search Engine Journal reports it is limited to owners with one verified profile and to the Gemini web app on desktop; that was not confirmed on Google's own page. No price is stated.

If you use Gemini or any AI tool to draft review replies, treat the output as a draft. Read it, correct any wrong details and make sure it reflects what actually happened with that customer.

Much of the advice written for local businesses leans on vendor claims. Pages checked for this guide include Vendasta's "10 Smart Ways to Use AI for Small Business Growth" (November 12, 2025), theStacc's "AI for Local Businesses" (updated July 10, 2026), Holdings' "How to Market a Local Business with AI" (July 2026) and a sponsored Observer-Reporter piece (February 22, 2025). Each has a product to sell or is generic, and several give no statistics or pricing.

Patterns to watch for: statistics are usually unsourced or sourced to a vendor, and none of those pages cited the Census or Minneapolis Fed data. None quoted Google's own AI-features or Business Profile guidance, covered the finding that AI local packs show about 32% of the businesses in the legacy 3-pack with no call button, or mentioned the FTC reviews rule, the TCPA or call-recording consent. Few covered trades such as HVAC or plumbing, and there was little on failure modes such as misrouted emergencies, wrong quotes or invented hours beyond a generic "review for errors."

The query itself mixes two intents: using AI tools to run a business, and getting found in AI search. This guide covers both so you can pick the one that matches your problem.
