Original research
What consumer research, Google's own documentation, and ranking-factor surveys show about how local businesses are found, judged, and chosen - and what remains unverified.

Local service business owners are often told to "do local SEO" without much clarity on what that means, what it costs, or whether the numbers behind the advice actually hold up. This page pulls together what could be verified from primary sources - Google's own Business Profile and Search Central documentation, BrightLocal's named 2025 review survey (n=1,026 US adults), and Whitespark's annual ranking-factor survey - alongside widely repeated figures that could not be traced to a checkable original source.
Where sources disagree or a number appears only in secondary blog citations without disclosed methodology, that is noted explicitly rather than smoothed over. No government agency (FTC, SBA, Census) publishes data on local search behavior or local SEO pricing; every figure below originates from private marketing or research firms, and is labeled accordingly.
The goal is to separate what a business owner or customer can independently verify today - such as Google's stated ranking factors or the structured-data requirements - from marketing-content estimates that get repeated as fact without a traceable source.

Method
Figures were drawn from primary vendor and platform sources where available: Google Business Profile Help, Google Search Central documentation, BrightLocal's named 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey (methodology disclosed: 1,026 US adults, surveyed via SurveyMonkey), and Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors survey (2025-2026 edition, an industry-practitioner survey rather than a Google-sourced study).
Aggregator and blog pages ranking for local search statistics (BrightLocal's own stats compilation, PinMeto, Shopify, SeoProfy, and others) were reviewed and cross-checked against the primary sources they cite.
Where a statistic appeared only in an aggregator or AI-generated summary without a locatable primary source (for example, the claim about complete LocalBusiness schema and Knowledge Panel appearance, or a 31%-of-consumers-want-4.5-stars figure), it was excluded from the findings below rather than reported as fact.
Where two sources gave different figures for the same metric (weekly search frequency, mobile search share), both figures are reported with their respective sources rather than averaged or reconciled.
Pricing figures reflect a single vendor's (WebFX) own published rate card plus its own characterization of the general market range; no industry-wide standardized price list was found.
What it means
Local search decisions happen fast and with a shrinking evidence bar: BrightLocal's 2026 consumer data shows 72% of people look at three or fewer businesses before choosing, 75% decide in under 30 minutes, and a growing 27% will commit to a business with as few as 0-49 reviews - while Google states plainly that none of this can be bought, only earned through relevance, distance, and prominence.
For owners
What to act on
Because 72% of consumers examine three or fewer businesses before deciding and 75% decide in under 30 minutes (BrightLocal, 2026), a business's visibility in the top local results and the strength of its review snippets matter more than being merely present in search results. Because Google states relevance, distance, and prominence are the only ranking factors and that ranking cannot be bought, spending on ads does not substitute for completing and maintaining a Google Business Profile. Because Whitespark's 2025-2026 survey weights GBP signals at 32% of Local Pack ranking (the largest single category, ahead of on-page at 19% and reviews at 16%), profile completeness and accuracy is where ranking effort has the most leverage, based on this data. Because 27% of consumers in BrightLocal's 2025 survey now say they'd decide based on a business with only 0-49 reviews (up year-over-year), a small but responsive set of recent reviews may matter more than a large historical volume. Because BrightLocal's 2025 survey found 63% of consumers expect a review response within 2-3 days to a week, and email requests for reviews are now cited as most effective by 40% of consumers (up from 32%), a slow or absent review-response habit runs against measured consumer expectations. Because Google Search Central requires only name and address for LocalBusiness structured data, but states additional properties improve result quality, owners can verify their own site's markup against Google's Rich Results Test rather than relying on a vendor's claim of compliance. Because no standardized industry price list for local SEO exists - figures range from a single vendor's own $575/month starting rate up to market ranges of $500-$3,000/month or more - any vendor quote should be evaluated on its own stated scope of work rather than compared to an assumed industry average.
For customers
What to notice
If you're comparing local businesses, you likely won't look far: BrightLocal's 2026 data shows 72% of consumers examine three or fewer businesses before deciding, and 75% decide in under 30 minutes, so a business's top few search results and review snippets carry outsized weight. You don't need a business to have hundreds of reviews to trust it: BrightLocal's 2025 survey (n=1,026 US adults) found 27% of consumers now say they'd decide based on a business with just 0-49 reviews, up year-over-year. If you check reviews, you're most likely using Google: 85% of review-readers in BrightLocal's 2025 survey used Google, versus only 6% who used ChatGPT or other AI tools for reviews. A business can't buy its way to the top of local search results: Google states directly on its Business Profile help page that 'there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.' If a business responds to your review, most people (63%, per BrightLocal 2025) expect that response within 2-3 days to a week - a slower response may signal an inactive listing.
